I built a solar-powered walk in cold room for small chicken farmers in Ghana.
No grid power. No fancy tools. Just something that works — day after day — in the heat.

The Right Temperature: 2°C to 4°C — No More, No Less
Chicken meat must stay between 2°C and 4°C.
- If it’s warmer than 4°C, bad germs grow fast — meat spoils in one day.
- If it’s colder than 0°C, the meat freezes. When it thaws, it gets dry and tough.
- We set it to 3°C. That’s the sweet spot. Safe. Juicy.
Any bigger change in temperature? That’s how freezers break in Ghana.
The Heat, Humidity, and Dust — What Makes This Hard
Ghana is hot. Really hot. And wet. And dusty. Here’s how we made it work:

We even made the drain pipe thicker — so dirt won’t clog it.
All water from melting ice? We let the sun dry it up. No puddles. No mess.
We Got the Weight Wrong at First — Here’s the Real Number
We thought 2,000 chickens = 2,000 kg.
But each chicken weighs 1.75 kg after cleaning.
So:
2,000 × 1.75 = 3,500 kg of meat to cool.
To cool 3,500 kg from 30°C to 3°C:
We need 25.3 kWh of electricity per day.
We built the system to use 28 kWh per day — just in case.
More power than needed. Always.
Solar Power That Doesn’t Quit

The battery box has a small solar fan inside — keeps it cool so it lasts longer.
What Happened After We Built It
In Savelugu, Ghana, we opened the second freezer in 2025.
47 farmers now use it.
- Chicken lasts 21 days — before, it spoiled in 12 hours.
- Price jumped from 10to1.10to2.30 per chicken.
- 5 local people now check the freezer every day. They get paid $120/month.
- No breakdowns in 18 months. Not one.
Farmers don’t have to sell cheap right after killing the chickens.
They can wait. They can choose.
This Isn’t Just a Walk in Cold Room
We didn’t give them a machine.
We gave them:
- Time — to sell when they want, not when the meat dies.
- Dignity — to earn more, not beg for middlemen to buy.
- Hope — their kids can eat fresh chicken, not salted dried meat.
Cooling isn’t about cold.
It’s about giving people control.
